There was a wide practice of discrimination on the basis of age, sex and ethnic origin in Bulgaria.
International companies, which would not dare discriminate in their own country for fear of legal and social intolerance, openly practiced discrimination in Bulgaria. Help wanted ads which set an age
limit and required that all applications for employment be accompanied by a photograph of the applicant were an everyday occurrence in the Bulgarian press. Women and minorities were the
most disadvantaged segment of the population.
