ear after year Bulgarians have hoped that they will have a better future. Generations withered waiting for it. Throughout Bulgarian literature this hope has been recreated over and over again.  With this hope, some of us left Bulgaria.

At least nine people were shot  and killed by police officers in disputed circumstances and in most  circumstances the police actions were not thoroughly investigated. Dozens of  other people were injured.

Amnesty InternationalAccording to Amnesty International, there is  at least one prisoner of conscience in Bulgaria. There were numerous reports of  torture and ill-treatment by law enforcement officials. The majority of the victims were members of the Roma ethnic group.

Human Rights WatchThere was a wide practice of discrimination on  the basis of age, sex and ethnic origin in Bulgaria. International companies, which would not dare discriminate in their own country for fear of legal and  social intolerance, openly practiced discrimination in Bulgaria. Help wanted ads  which set an age limit and required that all applications for employment be accompanied by a photograph of the applicant were an everyday occurrence in the  Bulgarian press. Women and minorities were the most disadvantaged segment of the  population.
